Description

A history of the Forces Postal Service by Edward Wells.
(Privately published by the Defence Postal & Courier Services 1987).
190pp with illustrations.
The Centenary of the Royal Engineers (Postal and Courier Services) in 1982 crystallised into focus the great need for a history to be written. Colonel ET Vallance had already completed a mammoth work entitled ‘Ubique – some stories of the Army’s Post’ several years before and this was used as a solid foundation for Mailshot.
The book traces the development of the Service up to 1982, the Centenary year, which also saw involvement in the Falklands War. Operation Corporate, as it was termed, stretched PCS resources (and the resourcefulness of ‘posties’) to the limit but proved beyond all doubt just how vital is the nature of the task performed by members of the PCS family.
