On 6th June 1944, the fortunes of the modern world shifted when Allied forces stormed the Normandy coast in the biggest amphibious invasion in history. In the years since the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Hitler had seized control of most of Western Europe. This was the Allies’ all-or-nothing attempt to break his grip and push the Nazis back to Berlin. It was codenamed ‘Operation Overlord’ – and would begin at H-Hour on D-Day.
BFPS has produced a double issue of commemorative covers to mark the 70th Anniversary of D-Day on the 6ᵗʰ June 2014.
The Operation Overlord – Spitfire and Typhoon cover will include a 1st Class stamp cancelled by the BFPS 3173 special handstamp “D-Day 70 Years On”.
The image on the cover shows a Spitfire and Typhoon fighter aircraft sporting D-Day markings used during Operation Overlord.
Included will be an A4 insert sheet with information about Operation Overlord. The insert and covers will be presented in a cellophane sleeve to create a high quality souvenir to mark the event.
