2019 sees the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy. Over the year there have been many events to honour and remember this bloody but courageous moment in our history. One such event is the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and BAE Systems Heroes Challenge 2019. It was held between the 18th and 22nd September and was a cycling event from London to Paris via the Normandy Landings, remembering D-Day in the process.
In collaboration with the RNRMC, BFPS produced the official Heroes Challenge 2019 commemorative cover and was issued on the 19th September 2019.
The images on the cover (courtesy of the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Cycling Association) portray the cycling theme of this year’s challenge. A 1st Class stamp featuring HMS Warspite pounding enemy positions in support of the beach landings was cancelled by the BFPS 3223 handstamp designed especially for this event.
The following versions of the commemorative cover are available:
- Standard unsigned costing just £7.50 each – bearing the “HMS Warspite” 1st class stamp.
- Numbered limited edition of 50 covers costing £15 each – bearing a “White Ensign” 1st class stamp and signed by Commodore Craig Wood, Commander Portsmouth Flotilla, who is participating in the Challenge.
Profits from these covers will be donated to the RNRMC.
These covers have an A4 information insert and both are presented in a protective cellophane slip.
